Heavy Duty Truck Filters Guide: Fleetguard vs Luber-finer vs Baldwin

October 23, 2026 · RPS Distributors

A heavy duty diesel engine depends on clean oil, clean fuel, clean air and clean coolant. Filters protect all four — and a $30 filter can prevent a repair bill in the thousands. Here is what fleets and shops need to know.

The filters every diesel truck needs

  • Oil filter — traps metal particles, soot and dirt. Change it with every oil change.
  • Fuel filter and fuel/water separator — removes dirt and water before fuel reaches the injectors. Critical in winter, when water can freeze and gelled fuel can plug the filter.
  • Air filter — keeps dust out of the engine. Check it more often on dusty routes and job sites.
  • Coolant filter — releases additives and removes debris in many heavy duty cooling systems.
  • Cabin air filter — keeps the driver's air clean. Often forgotten, but easy to add to a service.

When to change filters

Follow the engine manufacturer's service intervals and your oil analysis. As a rule of thumb:

  • Change oil filters with every oil change.
  • Change fuel filters at least as often as recommended — and carry a spare in winter.
  • Drain the water separator regularly.
  • Inspect air filters at every PM service and replace when the restriction indicator says so.

Comparing the major brands

Fleetguard, Luber-finer and Baldwin are three of the most widely used heavy duty filter brands in North America, alongside OEM filters from Caterpillar and PACCAR.

  • Fleetguard — the factory-fit filter on many Cummins-powered trucks, with a very wide catalog.
  • Luber-finer — a long-time aftermarket favorite with fleets for value and coverage.
  • Baldwin — known for a broad range covering trucks, construction and agricultural equipment.
  • CAT and PACCAR OEM filters — the choice when you want the exact factory part.

All of these brands publish cross-reference charts, so you can switch between them by part number. Most fleets choose based on OEM requirements, availability and price.

Tips for buying filters

  • Keep a list of the filter part numbers for each unit in your fleet.
  • Buy by the case for your most common numbers to lower the cost per filter.
  • Stock spare fuel filters before winter.
  • Pre-fill fuel filters where the maker recommends it to avoid hard starts.
